Do I need to regularly detox?

There are toxins everywhere, inside you right now! Quick! Detox! …Is what the fad diets and beauty companies tell you, but really, there’s no need. Here’s why:

Firstly, your body is a detox machine. Those organs inside you are cleaning your body of the bad stuff – naturally occurring poisons, dodgy bacteria in food and so on. It takes just a few hours to clean most toxins out.

Of course if you are exposed to high levels of toxins, perhaps extremely high pollution or a lot of poor quality, tainted food, then your body will take longer to detox. But a week on lemon juice and cayenne pepper isn’t going to make it happen any faster.

In fact, fasting – a common detox method – is going to have a reverse effect. Your body will react to fasting by releasing fat-soluble chemicals into your blood stream rather than releasing them as it usually would. So you’re doing more harm than good.

The lesson? Why not put that dedication to a detox diet to a year-round healthy lifestyle; no cigarettes, not too much alcohol, healthy food and moderate exercise. Simple.
