Bardowl kickstarts research into effect of audiobooks on people’s mood

Bardowl, the Netflix of audiobooks, has started research into the effect an audiobook can have on your mood.

The current hypothesis being that productivity, well-being and ability to multi-task will all improve.

“Listening to audiobooks isn’t just about a different medium of absorbing the content, but it’s about an experience that allows the reader to be fully immersed in the book. We want to find out what matters to listeners, whether that’s just the type of book or whether that’s the narrator or time spent listening.”

— Chris Book, CEO of Bardowl

While I am not a fan of multi-tasking myself (find out why here) I do agree that audiobooks can be beneficial – we all know a book improves your mood (until you reach the end of a series and ask yourself ‘what do?’) and books can broaden you culturally. So a vast library, Netflix style, of audiobooks means you’ll be able to take in more words on the go.

Bardowl’s research is currently in the preliminary stages. They have asked a select group of people to self-track their mood after listening to an audiobook using their service. Over time this will show, based on a small sample, whether or not your mood is lifted (although it really could depend on the book!).

Results, so far, show that:

  • 70% of respondents who were stressed before listening to audiobooks were either more productive or in a neutral state after listening to audiobooks.
  • 85% of respondents who were in a normal state before listening to audiobooks were either in a happier mood or in the same normal mood after listening to audiobooks.
  • 95% of respondents who took the survey did not report being in a negative mood after listening to audiobooks.
  • 80% of respondents who took the survey felt more mentally alert as a result of listening to snippets of audiobooks during dead time throughout the day.

We’re looking forward to seeing this research continue. In the meantime, why not try Bardowl for yourself with their one month free trial, get it here.
