Interview with Max Del Vita, CEO at Klappo

The explosion ofMax Del Vita - CEO at Klappo health and wellness apps, along with the increase in consumer looking to access big data their in everyday lives, means that accurate data on the food and drink we’re putting into our bodies could be big business. At the TechCrunch Disrupt event in New York City Klappo announced that they were launching a new API (Sensum.io) to try to provide businesses and consumers with the information they desire. I was able to catch-up with the CEO at Klappo, Max Del Vita, this week to find out more about the business and how its new API could change the digital health landscape…

PH: HI MAX, COULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN WHAT KLAPPO IS?

MDV: Klappo is a semantic platform for ingredients. That means we take food data and make it usable for developers who want to build food, wellness and nutrition based apps. We clean the data and apply semantic reasoning and natural language processes to it: this gives the data meaning and makes it easy to understand the exact properties of the ingredients and how they interact with each other and with your body.

PH: AND WHAT ABOUT SENSUM.IO? HOW IS THAT DIFFERENT?

MDV: Sensum.io is an API that is based on the Klappo knowledge base. It is a complete tool kit for developers who want to build any kind of food-related mobile app or content to provide deep insights about food for consumers.

PH: WITH SO MANY OTHER ESTABLISHED COMPETITORS, HOW DO YOU THINK KLAPPO AND THE NEW API IS DIFFERENT?

MDV: Klappo is the most granular and accurate source of packaged food and ingredient related data in the UK with more than 60,000 ingredients and 130,000 packaged products.

PH: HOW DOES KLAPPO MAKE MONEY?

MDV: Sensum.io has a transactional business model, meaning developers are billed every month based on the amount of data their platforms use. This enables small and medium sized companies to have access to the powerful platform without a large upfront investment.

PH: WHAT’S COMING NEXT FROM KLAPPO OR SENSUM.IO?

MDV: We are launching new markets and expanding the platform with new features. In the future we will venture out with new types of commercial applications of our data.

PH: WHAT DO YOU PERSONALLY TRACK ON A DAILY BASIS?

MDV: I was an early adopter of Jawbone App and since then I have used Fitbit, Misfit Shine, Body Media for fitness tracking and sleep detection, Beddit to track sleep activity and I track lots of stats with software such as travel (TripIt), movement (Moves), finance (CoinKeeper). I’d love to track more nutrition and there is no really good app for this yet!

PH: LASTLY, WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE FUTURE OF SELF QUANTIFICATION?

MDV: Self quantification is going to completely disrupt our lives and the way we approach the health system and everyday choices. We have data available that we can apply to our lifstyles that can improve our health in many ways, including preventative medicine. This will rely on the entire ecosystem coming together to aggregate the tools from data providers, hardware and software developers, big data analytics and real life applications of these tools in everyday life.
