The Friday Interview: Ville Simola, VP at Checkmylevel

Ville Simola

This week we spoke to Ville Simola, VP at Checkmylevel, the handheld fatigue monitor reviewed last month that assesses whether a person has recovered from training and when their body is ready for their next session. Checkmylevel is a Finnish company and recently launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo looking to raise $80,000 for the development of Checkmylevel’s API, allowing data to be shared with third party services (the first of these will be Beddit, the best sleep monitoring system in the market – which the PixelHealth team is currently testing out too).

PH: HI VILLE, COULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN WHAT CHECKMYLEVEL IS?

VS: Checkmylevel a non-invasive way for sports enthusiasts to assess their recovery level and personal training readiness.  The method is based on assessing the recovery level of muscles and the assessment takes only 30-seconds which makes it the fastest product in the market.

PH: HOW DOES CHECKMYLEVEL MAKE MONEY?

VS: Basically we have two business models. The fist one is selling devices and reusable assessment electrodes to individual users. The second model is selling an more advanced subscription-based model targeted both professional sport team and coaches.

PH: WHAT’S COMING NEXT FROM CHECKMYLEVEL?

VS: We are currently building an API for Checkmylevel that enables integrating the data with any other 3rd party health service. The first integration we are going to do with sleep tracking service Beddit.

PH: WHAT DO YOU PERSONALLY TRACK ON A DAILY BASIS?

VS: I ‘Checkmylevel’ of course, which tracks the recovery level of my body and training readiness. It also gives me training recommendations for both endurance and strength & power training.

PH: LASTLY, WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE FUTURE OF SELF QUANTIFICATION?

VS: We see that the biggest value of self quantification is in the data not in all the different devices and gadgets. Currently the problem in the market is that the data is too fragmented. We see that the market is moving into direction where different data is pooled together for different needs. Our goal is to provide Checkmylevel recovery and readiness data into different services serving the needs of sport enthusiasts and professional athletes.
