Review: SOL REPUBLIC Relays Sports Earphones
I’ll have to admit, I’ve had no previous experience with Sol Republic so was eager to try these out as often struggle with finding comfortable inner ear headphones (I usually stick to headphones for ease). Read on for my full review.
To start, the packaging, both beautiful and intricate – if not verging on slightly complicated by the time you’ve unwrapped, undone and untangled the earphones from within the box. I would say I was someone who judges a book by its cover so I had high hopes as the case it came in was a work of art in itself. Along with the earphones, there are four pairs of different size silicone tips which is extremely useful as there is no ‘one size fits all’ for ear canal sizes.
I have tiny ear canals and solemn find a pair of ear phone that fit in or stay in. The hassle of re-arranging, or re-inserting every five minutes when you’re on the treadmill is enough to put me off wearing them all together. With Sol Republic, the multiple tip sizes were a perfect solution. Whilst on the treadmill, I was also able to use the handy clothing clip so the wires weren’t flying round during my jog. The earphones claim to isolate background noise, which they do to a degree but do not, by any measure, noise cancelling. The sound quality itself was a bit disappointing. They had a thin, tiny sound that felt stripped back and lacked the bass I really enjoy when listening to music. However, if its voiced based podcasts or something similar that you listen to these will do the job.
At £19.99 this price is much more reasonable than the original RRP of £39.99. For under 20 quid you get a decent pair of earphones, that are long lasting – even through vigorous wear and cheaper than many competition products with the same features / benefits offering. Sol Republic also offer free replacement tips for life, which is great value for money. For a deeper, richer sound emitting earphone I would be willing to pay more but was perfectly happy with the quality at this price.
It does what it says on the tin, they are great earphones for using at the gym. They are comfortable and despite my best efforts did not slip out (sweaty ears and all). However, for this price you can probably find earphones with better sound quality. If Sol Republic focused on getting this right, and maybe less so on the outer exterior of the merchandise, they would have a really great product.
